MAIREAD CASE

53

Tiny doesn’t think she can open the car door, even though her hand is already reaching for it. It’s the same old car door, but in the back seat is a shape like her brother. It is like Kelley, but it is not.

Tiny feels big heat coming from inside the car, like leaving the movies in summertime. She is surprised the windows are not foggy. Dead Kelley’s neck has an electrical cord wrapped around five times tight, flush underneath the little fist-shape in his throat. Tiny remembers when Kelley didn’t have an apple at all. Kelley’s eyes went red, and there is a stream of dried blood out his nose. His face looks like an allergic reaction. Tiny can’t look at the body through the window anymore. She can’t see it.

It’s too bright, too radioactive.

When Tiny closes her eyes, she sees the shape.

Sees her brother like sunspots.

Tiny is sure she is more alone now, which makes a horrible buzz.

Tiny thinks: which electrical cord is that, and where do I buy another?

We’re missing one now.

She walks outside the garage and barfs into the rhododendron.
