Chapter 3. “I’m in Between”: Daughters and Health Inheritances

Оглавление

The multiple ways that daughters define health and how they think about their own health needs is the focus of this chapter. Identifying the meaning of health elicited a broad range of answers from the daughter groups—everything from “hygiene” to “responsibility.” Health-care access, perceptions of doctors’ treatment of them, and their own struggles to stay healthy are explored. Their narratives reflect present-day challenges for many young teens, including the lack of consistent physical activity, access to cheap and unhealthy foods, and the financial struggles of working parents. Although many of the daughters have been exposed to a great deal of health information and health-care access, they often do not see or experience themselves as healthy. Their narratives also indicate areas of strength and resilience in girls’ awareness of the media’s role in circulating unrealistic body images.
