Chapter 4. “I Want That First Kiss to Be Perfect”: Mothers on Intimacy, Pleasure, and Sexuality

Оглавление

This chapter looks at how mothers grapple with communication about sexuality and intimacy. Mothers’ fears and insecurities about how their daughters will negotiate relationships and sexuality distinctly emerge in these narratives. In discussing their concerns about their daughters, their own sexual stories and the challenges they experienced with their parents and peers (but most especially their mothers) are revealed. The chapter explores how mothers grappled with and confronted their own past sexual histories and challenges, or did not. The contexts of intimacy and desire are investigated as mothers frame loss and possibility in their hopes for their daughters’ intimate lives. We also begin to see how single-parent status and being an early mother influence patterns of communication across groups.
