Tips for Evaluating Students’ Responses

Оглавление

In addition to the criteria noted for evaluating any written response,

1 Look for details that clearly connect to the central idea you have specified. Students sometimes confuse interesting with supporting. Of course, it’s nice when a supporting detail can also be interesting. But there are many fanciful details in texts that may add interest but don’t drive the plot.

2 Look for details that come directly from the text. Sometimes students sort of invent details. If they have background knowledge about a subject—for example, planets—they may tell you that a detail about Mars is that it’s known as the Red Planet, even though that particular detail was not in today’s article. We need to enforce early on that details must come from the text itself. This will save us lots of hand-wringing down the line when the stakes for written response are a lot higher.
