When you think about potential chairs, perhaps more than one faculty member comes to mind—you are fortunate. While dissertation co-chair structures can work, they are uncommon, so you need to narrow your choice to one person—and using a set of criteria may help you make this decision. Even though they are usually not explicitly articulated to or translated for doctoral students, these principles may serve to guide your dissertation chair selection process by directing you to a faculty member who meets your scholarly research needs. Below are a set of criteria to consider—you may use them as is or adapt them to conform to your personal set of criteria or within the parameters of your program and/or university policies that govern chair appointments.
