Chapter Purpose

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the concept of the dissertation as a methodology—a genre of social science research with conventions that guide development and practice of dissertation studies. Moving directly into an exploration of the dissertation as a unique approach to conceptualizing, designing, and conducting research in the social and behavioral sciences, the chapter begins with a discussion of the historical and contemporary contexts of the dissertation and ends with a look at how institutional contexts and program type shape the focus, structure, and parameters of dissertations. Then, the chapter focuses on qualitative dissertation methodology from historical and technical perspectives, with an eye toward key characteristics and uses of qualitative methodology, methods, and procedures in dissertation research.
