Introduction

This student workbook is intended to be used in conjunction with the textbook Elementary Tagalog. It contains grammar exercises that are designed to reinforce learning and assist you in mastering the forms and structures introduced in the textbook. The exercises follow the same organization by unit and lesson as in the textbook, and together they should help you to focus more closely on accuracy in your handling of Tagalog grammar.

In addition to grammar exercises, listening and reading comprehension exercises are provided to help you develop aural and reading skills. These exercises are similarly anchored in the unit themes and subtopics. They are designed to promote the acquisition of high-frequency vocabulary pertaining to common everyday topics—the vocabulary you need in order to have an ordinary conversation. The audio files for the listening texts, each 45 seconds to 2 minutes long, are contained on the audio CD that accompanies the Elementary Tagalog textbook.

Typically, each lesson in the workbook includes one vocabulary exercise, one conjugation practice, three to four grammar practices, one reading practice, one editing activity, two listening exercises, and one translation activity. Each activity targets different aspects of the grammatical forms that are presented and explained in the textbook. Practice is an indispensable element in the mastering a foreign language. An essential supplement to classroom instruction, this student workbook is a valuable tool for individualized instruction and practice.
