NOTES
Оглавление1. I use generation in the broadest sense to describe literary history or when writers’ work became available to the public. Classifying writers is a complex undertaking; any number of factors from whether writers were born in or migrated to Britain, their age on arrival and the age of their target audiences, whether they live in or pass through Britain occasionally, and the convergences in style and subject matter across authors of different reading and writing ages complicate such a task. Mark Stein proffers a more comprehensive problematization of the challenges inherent in classifying authors according to generations in Black British Literature: Novels of Transformation (2004).
2. I define othering on Theodore Shank’s (1994) use of the term to describe cultural and socio-political settings in which there are ‘people who are perceived as having political and economic power and there are other cultures existing alongside the dominant one’ (Shank 1994: 3) and on Ashcroft et al’s (1989: 8–9; 12) use of ‘centre-periphery’ to define relations between formerly colonised cultures and their erstwhile colonisers in postcolonial discourse in The Empire Writes Back.
