THE QUINTESSENCE OF WISDOM OPENNESS%

Padmasambhava

Emerging from samadhi, Padmakara taught this root yoga, the source of all mandalas:%

Having obtained the supreme freedoms and riches, and being weary of impermanence,%

With intense renunciation, endeavor in accepting and rejecting what concerns cause and effect.%

Those possessing faith and compassion,%

Who wish to attain the supreme and common siddhis in this very life,%

Should ripen their being through empowerment and, with totally pure samaya,%

Take refuge, the root of the path,%

As well as generate the twofold bodhichitta, the essence of the path.%

All evil deeds and obscurations, the conditions opposing experiences and realization%

Of Vajrayana, the ultimate part of the path,%

Should be purified through the profound practice of Vajrasattva.%

In order to perfect the positive conditions, the accumulation of merit and wisdom,%

Offer the mandalas of the ocean-like realms of the three kayas.%

In particular, apply the key points of the essence of all the paths,%

The guru yoga of devotion:%

Amid an ocean of offering clouds in the sky before me,%

Upon the lion throne and layered lotus, sun, and moon,%

Is Orgyen Tötreng Tsal, the embodiment of all objects of refuge.%

He has one face and two arms and is wrathfully smiling and glowing with resplendent light.%

He wears the lotus crown, secret dress, gown, Dharma robes, and brocade cloak.%

Holding a vajra in his right hand and a skull with a vase in his left,%

He embraces the secret mudra in the hidden form of a khatvanga.%

With his two feet in the reveling posture, he is within a sphere of five-colored rainbow light.%

He sends out cloud banks of the all-encompassing Three Roots.%

All that appears and exists is the essence of the glorious guru.%

Perform the external practice in the manner of supplication%

And the inner practice in the manner of recitation.%

Afterward, receive the four empowerments and dissolve Guru Rinpoche into yourself.%

In the luminous state of your mind inseparable from the guru,%

Experience one-pointedly the secret, ultimate guru.%

Through the practice of the great emptiness, the space of suchness,%

Where all the relative and ultimate dharmas%

Are the great supreme dharmakaya of the inseparable two truths,%

You will realize death as the natural state of luminosity.%

Through the practice of the all-illuminating samadhi,%

In the illusory manner of nonconceptual compassion,%

Toward unrealized sentient beings pervading space,%

The bardo will appear as the forms of the deities of the Magical Net.%

Particularly, in order to purify the process of taking birth,%

Practice the development stage, which ends clinging to ordinary experience:%

Visualize as perfected in instantaneous recollection in order to purify miraculous birth,%

And visualize through the emanation and absorption of the seed syllable in order to purify birth by warmth.%

Visualize the seed syllable, attributes, and bodily form in order to purify womb birth,%

And visualize the cause and effect heruka in order to purify egg birth.%

In all cases, visualize the mandala of the base and the based,%

And the faces, arms, and attributes in total completeness.%

First, in order to train gradually in this,%

Visualize yourself in the form of the single mudra%

With vivid features, like a rainbow.%

At best, regard it as the natural great absolute;%

As the next best, envision the distinct general and specific features;%

At least, plant the stake of unchanging concentration.%

Place an image with all the characteristics before you%

And focus your mind, eyes, and prana one-pointedly upon it.%

When a vivid presence appears, abandon the defects of drowsiness and agitation,%

Rest in the state where the form of the deity is the unity of appearance and emptiness,%

And the experience will arise, in which the turbulence of thoughts has subsided.%

Sometimes rest, bringing consciousness to its natural state.%

Sometimes transform the expression of your concentration into many different things.%

In each session, bring the clear appearance of the deity to perfection.%

In each session, plant the great stake of the essence mantra.%

In each session, rest in the same taste of the deity and your mind.%

In each session, accomplish the magical display of emanating and absorbing rays of light.%

At all times, keep the pride of being inseparable from the deity.%

Since the path illustrates the unity of ground and fruition,%

Practice the total purity that stops the clinging to ordinary experience.%

In between sessions, mend the samayas with feast gatherings and tormas.%

Bring all that appears and exists onto the path%

As the essence of the magical deity, mantra, and great wisdom.%

If you practice one-pointedly in this way,%

The experiences of movement, attainment, habituation, steadiness, and perfection will arise,%

And you will actually meet with the form possessing the threefold vividness.%

You will accomplish the truth of speech and a changeless mind.%

Next, fix your mind on the entire mandala circle,%

And when you have gradually attained its vivid presence,%

Emanate groups of buddha families filling the sky.%

Through the samadhi of the Magical Net%

Of the Vidyadhara power-wielders, and appearance and existence as manifest ground,%

And by means of group practice in an assembly,%

The highest siddhi will be accomplished.%

With the perfect place, time, teacher, retinue, and articles,%

Correctly perform the “rite of the land”%

And practice the sadhanas of outer, inner, and secret retreat.%

Erect the sign mandala as the support for concentration,%

A vivid and complete image adorned with ornaments.%

Visualize yourself and the whole retinue, the self-existing mandala deities,

As inseparable means and knowledge.%

By the light rays of Approach and Full Approach,%

Purify the outer world into the Lotus Net Realm.%

By the emanation and absorption of the light rays of Accomplishment,%

Transform all the inner inhabitants into the forms of the Magical Net of the Vidyadharas.%

Purify your being by the Great Accomplishment.%

Then, through the vivid presence of the deity forms and the rays of the mantra,%

And through the samadhi of bliss and emptiness and the practices of uniting and freeing,%

When completing six, twelve, or eighteen months,%

As the outer signs, you will actually have a vision of the deity,%

The mandala will emit light, and the nectar in the vase will boil.%

The skull cup will tremble, and the butter lamp will ignite by itself.%

As the inner signs, your body, speech, and mind will be blissful; your prana and awareness will be clear;%

And your perception of all the dharmas of fixation and grasping will be illusory.%

As the secret signs, your mind will be changeless in one-pointed samadhi,%

And the assembly of deities will be perfected within you.%

Since at this time you will have realized the supreme siddhi,%

You can display various miracles of the one taste of appearances and mind.%

Even without changing your body, your mind will initially accomplish%

The Vidyadhara of Full Maturation in the form of a deity.%

You will attain the mastery of life, the vajra body,%

And by means of the supreme family of the great mudra of the five aspects,%

You will perfect the ten bhumis and realize the great regency,%

The Vidyadhara of Spontaneous Accomplishment.%

The intent of recitation, the auxiliary of the development stage,%

Has four visualizations of Approach and Accomplishment.%

First, upon the moon in your heart center,%

Within the center of the five-pronged golden vajra,%

Is the letter HRIH upon a moon, glowing like a flame.%

The mantra garland surrounding it%

Is self-resounding and revolves continuously.%

To fix your mind on this, like the moon with a garland of stars,%

Is called the intent of Approach invoking the mind of the deity.%

The mantra garland emanating from there emerges through your mouth%

And enters through the mouth of the wisdom being before you.%

Passing through the bodily form and the navel lotus,%

It enters your navel and revolves as before.%

Light rays and essences gather in your heart bindu.%

Imagine that the wisdom of great bliss is stabilized%

And that all the siddhis are mastered.%

This concentration, like the wheel of a firebrand,%

Is the intent of the Full Approach to the deity.%

This can also be exchanged with the form of the consort, your own radiance,%

Or with any of the different emanation visualizations%

In order to invoke the surrounding assembly of deities.%

By the light rays emanating from the mantra,%

Offering clouds make offerings to the noble ones and gather the blessings back into you.%

The obscurations are purified, the accumulations are perfected, and you have obtained the empowerments and siddhis.%

As they emanate again, the karmas and disturbing emotions of the beings of the three realms are purified.%

Emanating and absorbing, like the emissaries of the king,%

Is the intent of mastering the Accomplishment of siddhis.%

At this time, the outer world is the vajra realm of Akanishtha.%

Appearances are deities, and all the animate and inanimate sounds are mantras.%

Thoughts are the display of nondual wisdom.%

During this, reciting in the great state of appearance and existence as manifest ground,%

This practice, like a beehive broken open,%

Is the intent of the Great Accomplishment of siddhis.%

You should apply these four intents of vajra recitation%

Chiefly to the practices of the single form, the elaborate form,%

The group, and the gathering.%

The next practice should be entered when the vivid presence of the former is perfected.%

However, through the intent of these instructions of mine, Self-Born Lotus,%

The way of practicing the recitation intents of Approach and Accomplishment,%

Combined into one in a single sitting session,%

Has been taught in order to swiftly produce blessings and signs.%

Through the internal way of profound HUNG recitation,%

Clinging to the appearances of the development stage stops and the power of awareness increases.%

Through the secret and most profound method of the prana recitation of great bliss,%

Samadhi is stabilized and pliancy is attained.%

As to the ultimate practice of dissolution into luminosity,%

By HUNG HUNG HUNG, the world and its inhabitants, along with your body,%

Gradually dissolve into the seed syllable, the letter HRIH.%

This again dissolves into the innate state of nonconceptual luminosity.%

Where the past has ceased and the future has not yet arisen,%

In the unimpeded state of present wakefulness,%

Rest in the manner of mind looking into mind.%

No matter what thoughts may arise at this time,%

They are all the display of the single mind essence.%

As the nature of space is unchanging,%

You will realize the all-pervasive mind essence to be changeless.%

This is the Great Perfection, the ultimate of all vehicles,%

The unexcelled meaning of the self-existing Mind Section.%

Whoever practices this ultimate yoga%

Will have limitless secret signs and virtues.%

The great power of experience and realization will gradually be perfected,%

And they will attain the wisdom of the Ever-Excellent Padma.%

By then uttering PHAT PHAT PHAT,%

Perceive yourself and the world with its inhabitants as the mandala circle.%

Within the state of the unity of the development and completion,%

Further increase the two accumulations of merit and wisdom.%

This essence of the ocean of tantras and oral instructions%

Is complete and concise and has immense blessings.%

It is easy to practice and is the path to enlightenment in one lifetime.%

It contains the key points in the intent of the Magical Net of the Vidyadharas%

And of the Direct Vision of the Ever-Excellent Mind Essence,%

Which I have gathered as the vital blood in my heart.%

I, the great Self-Born Padma, have taught it%

For the benefit of the present king, his sons, and my disciples%

And for the benefit of qualified beings in the future.%

Future generations, do not let this nectar dissipate, but collect this essence%

And accomplish the supreme and common siddhis!%

My children, practice continuously!%

Practitioners of knowledge mantras, never be apart from development and recitation!%

Yogis, bring your realization to encompass dharmadhatu!%

Samaya, seal, seal, seal.

Having expounded this most affectionate instruction, pouring out from the treasury of his realization, he entered the all-magnetizing samadhi.%

This was the fourth chapter from the Wish-Fulfilling Essence Manual of Oral Instructions, on the Quintessence of Wisdom Openness, the root samadhi, which is the source of all mandalas.%
