FOR SKIP

When he learns I’m writing a story about us, he makes me a timeline. Spring, summer, fall, winter. 1976 through 1979, because he knows I’m lousy with dates. Even so, I get things all screwed up. When he reads the next-to-final draft, he says, “The way you have it written, we got married in 1977.” “Yes,” I say, “that’s right.” “But we got married in 1978.” “Are you sure?”

So he makes me another timeline because I lost the first one, and this time when I revise the book, I get everything in order. Mostly.

When I show him my dedication page, he says, “It’s kind of long, isn’t it?” “Not nearly long enough,” I say, “but if you want me to, I’ll stop here.” “I guess it kind of says it all. You and me, workin’ things through. Collaborating.” “Yes,” I say, “but it looks like I get the last word.”
