Chapter 4 Premedication

Оглавление

Annie Pang MD, Nikhil Rastogi MD

  Learning Objectives

1 To gain an appreciation of the indications and contraindications for prescribing medications prior to an operative procedure.

 Key Points

1 The majority of adult patients do not require preoperative sedation.

2 Provided there are no contraindications to their use, acetaminophen and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication may be used to provide a foundation of analgesia for postoperative pain management (see Chapter 17 Acute Pain Management).

3 Reasons for prescribing medications prior to an operative procedure can be related to the patient, the procedure, or the patient’s coexisting medical condition.

Overview:

The majority of adult patients do not require sedation prior to their surgical procedure, though a discussion about the procedure and anesthetic in a compassionate way will help reassure the patient. Medications are prescribed preoperatively to avoid potential complications associated with the surgical procedure or to continue the patient’s current medications for coexisting medical conditions.
