Federal PET Diploma “Craftsperson in Monument Preservation”

The work on buildings of historical value makes particular demands on the craftspeople: they need to master techniques which are used only rarely today and are no longer taught in VET programmes. In the case of listed buildings, monument preservation requires detailed documentation of the work which is carried out. Dealing with buildings of historical value requires a great deal of attention to be paid to the existing building fabric. Efficient and timely work is less important than protecting the building fabric. Cooperation among the participating crafts is more important than for the well-planned work on new buildings.

With the Federal PET Diploma for Craftspeople in Monument Preservation (Handwerker/in in der Denkmalpflege), the aim is to ensure that the competences required for such situations are available. This diploma has existed since 2012 in eight specialisations: horticulture, woodwork, painting, masonry/plasterwork, furniture and interior construction, natural stone, paving and dry masonry and also stucco.[9] The provider is an association to which the trade associations of the involved crafts belong, for example the Schweizerische Maler- und Gipserunternehmer-Verband (Swiss Association of Painters and Plasterers), as well as organisations for the preservation of objects of cultural value, for example the Konferenz der Schweizer Denkmalpflegerinnen und Denkmalpfleger (Conference of Swiss Monument Conservators). It is an examination based on the modular system because it is not possible to examine key qualifications such as the personal attitude towards building fabric of historical value. This is why it is stipulated that candidates attend certain modules, and in the discussion and with excursions an attempt is made to establish the desired attitudes.
