Оглавление4 A Real Cup of Coffee
Richard opens the door of the small coffee shop, takes a deep breath[1] of the fresh morning air and smiles. It is a nice morning today; sunny and warm. But this is not why Richard is happy. No, the reason[2] that Richard is happy, is because he loves his job.
Every morning, when he opens the door of his small coffee shop, on the nice street in the north of London, he smiles, and he smiles all day. Richard loves to make fantastic cups of coffee for his customers.[3]
He walks back to the counter,[4] checks the coffee machine and waits.
He does not need to wait very long because after just a few minutes a man in a suit[5] opens the door and walks in. He is a tall man with a long nose, grey hair and serious[6] eyes. He has a briefcase[7] in one hand and his phone in the other. The phone is at his ear and he is talking very loudly.
“Now, listen to me,” he says into his phone. “I want that report[8] on my desk[9] by Friday. Do you understand? The last report was two days late; that is not OK. I want it by Friday or you can go and find a new job.”
The man moves the phone from his ear. “Coffee,” he says.
Richard smiles, but he does not move.
“And another thing,” the man says into his phone. “I want all of the information to be correct. I don’t want to find any mistakes.[10] Do you understand? I don’t make mistakes, so why do you?”
The man looks at Richard, moves the phone from his ear and says again, “Coffee.”
Richard smiles. “Good morning, sir. What type of coffee[11] would you like?”
“What?” asks the man.
“What type of coffee would you like, sir? We have cappuccinos, espressos, lattes, Americanos, macchiatos, long blacks, flat whites, and frappes.”
For a moment the man stares[12] at Richard. “Just coffee!” he says. “Just black coffee! And be quick, I’m in a hurry.”
“Of course, sir. Would you like caffeinated or decaffeinated?”[13]
“Caffeinated!”
“Excellent. Now, would you like a small, medium, large or super large?”
The man’s face goes purple.[14] “Medium!”
Richard smiles and starts to pour[15] the coffee.
“Now…” says the man into his phone. “What was I saying? Oh yes, no mistakes! Check all the information three times and …”
“Excuse me?”
The man moves the phone from his ear again. “What? What is it now?”
“Would you like sugar, sir? We have white or brown.”
“No!”
“Sweetener?[16] Or maybe a little cinnamon[17] or chocolate on your coffee?”
“No! No! No!” The man shouts. “Look, all I want is a real cup of coffee! Do you understand that? I want a real cup of coffee and I want it now!”
Richard smiles again and puts the cup of coffee on the counter in front of the man. “There you are, sir. One cup of coffee. Can I offer you anything else?[18] We have some excellent muffins.”
“No, idiot, I do not want any muffins! How much is the coffee?”
“That’s £1.99, sir,” says Richard, his smile still on his happy face.
The man puts his phone down on the counter. He puts his hand into one jacket pocket,[19] then another, then another.
“Is everything OK, sir?”
“My wallet,”[20] the man says. “I don’t know where …” He puts his hand into his trouser pockets, too. “I don’t think I have my wallet.”
“Ah …” says Richard.
“I have the money in my wallet, but I think I left it at home.[21] It’s just a …”
“Mistake?” says Richard. “That’s strange.[22] I thought I heard you say that you don’t make mistakes.”
“Idiot!” the man shouts, before he picks up his phone and walks out of the shop.
Richard smiles, picks up the coffee and takes a sip.[23] “Ah, a real cup of coffee, my favourite.”
