The following is an account of how two Canadian ships protected their country’s Arctic sovereignty. It is a true story of friendship, seamanship, hardship, leadership and flagships.

There were many vessels and many people who paved the way for St. Roch and North Star of Herschel Island. This work is primarily a tribute to these two vessels’ contributions.

In order to appreciate these two sisters of the ice in the Canadian Arctic we must first set the stage to recall what prompted their births and their arrivals north.
