The nature of cultural competence is discussed with regard to social work research methods. The importance of cultural competence is discussed with regard to each of the major phases of the research process. For example, the determination of the purpose of the research study should include reference to the implications of this endeavor to cultural issues. Measurement should attend to the possibility that different cultural groups may be more likely to volunteer to participate under certain circumstances. Also, the cultural meanings of concepts included in measurement tools should be addressed. Finally, sampling should consider ways to ensure appropriate representation of different cultural groups.
