7. Insurance
ОглавлениеWhat would happen if one of your guests fell and broke an ankle on your front walk? Or if a guest fell ill because of accidental food contamination? You must protect yourself against any liability arising as a result of conducting your B&B business.
Also, how could you carry on your B&B business if you suddenly became incapacitated due to illness or accident? If help from family members or friends was not available, you would need to hire outside help to run your business while you were recovering. We recommend that you protect yourself with health and accident insurance.
You are probably not covered under your existing homeowners’ policy, so you should check with your insurance company to see what special conditions they require to provide the extra coverage.
If you are having your premises inspected by the fire, building, and health authorities, you should receive a better premium. It is also wise to shop around. Many insurance companies don’t want to get involved in the B&B business, so they will quote you a high premium in the hope that you will go elsewhere. A few insurance companies specialize in the small business field, and they can quote very competitive rates, particularly if you belong to a business group. Contact your nearest chamber of commerce or bed-and-breakfast association for advice.
