Abstract

In this century, international politics complexity begs the incorporation of analytical tools from geopolitics and geo-economics, in which geography, economic history and politics intersect, an analysis that becomes important because its consequences affect all of us. Accelerated changes since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union are challenging the international order built at the end of the second world war. We witness simultaneously an excess of confidence on the continuity of the new global order and unsatisfied social demands that have developed into transnational movements with the capacity to transform the international system. The decompression of the post-cold war has facilitated the emergence of new actors and forms of cooperation, while conflicts that remained latent during the open rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union have recovered centrality. Their abrupt emergence makes them to be perceived as a succession of hasty and ill-conceived events with unexpected international consequences. They share, however, some common factors – technology provides the opportunity of building new instruments of cooperation or conflict, the fight for power reincorporates forgotten dimensions, and while power is becoming more diffused it is more questioned. This book includes studies of international politics in the xxi century, each of them divided into three sections: in the first, we analyze what happened, where and when; the second one presents the positions and perspectives of those who participated in the process or were affected by it; and the third section incorporates the author’s interpretation, but the reader can choose an alternative view. To make this possible, the first chapter summarizes different theoretical approaches of International Relations with the aim to demonstrate that interpretations of international politics encompass epistemological and ontological problems, even if they are not discussed in this book due to its orientation toward non-specialized readers.
