This book is dedicated to my professional colleague and great friend Vivyan Alers.

Vivyan was a respected and dedicated occupational therapist, especially in group work, and much of her work is reflected in this book.

She was involved initially as co‐author of this book and was part of the whole process of designing it and communicating with the publishers. It was her dream to publish a book about her passion for occupational group therapy. She was a skilled group therapist and psychodramatist particularly in the use of the Therapeutic Spiral technique. She used her skill in the most effective way when she worked with impoverished and traumatised people in Johannesburg as well as in many other environments.

She had an infectious and lovely, kind personality and was much loved. She passed away suddenly at the age of 64 in 2018. She is sadly missed.
