Character and personality
ОглавлениеOur character is made up of two parts: that which we carry with us from other incarnations and that which we make of it in this lifetime.
Our character is changeable, as it is dependent on circumstances and influenced by many factors. It is the sum total of all our incarnations, as each lifetime leaves traces within us, on the energy level as well as the thought level. These legacies form an attraction that draws us towards particular circumstances, people, cultures and experiences in our next incarnation. They are the reason why we incarnate at a particular time in a particular place. So we could say that our character always takes us where it has the opportunity to meet that which is like-minded, similar or the same as the soul parts it carries.
Our surroundings show us who we are, or what our character is.
We find the image of our character in our day-to-day life. Even the smallest experience is a pointer towards our inner image of ourselves. These pointers are transferred by the soul to our mind and serve to enable us to understand the root cause of our experiences as well as lead us towards happiness. We can utilize these pointers and information intelligently for our own happiness, or we can ignore them and put the blame on other people. However, each one of us is and remains the root cause of all the beautiful and ugly experiences of our own life.
When we take these pointers seriously and aim to integrate the insights gained from them into our behaviour, we will continue to grow ever happier, since we will continue to ennoble our character. We ennoble our character by acting in ways that benefit us and benefit the people around us. We have the choice and we have the power to become good people or bad people, and this choice is in everything we do, think, want and give out. But in the end, we are the only ones bearing the consequences of our actions.
Of importance is not only what we carry within us, but also how we deal with it. If, for instance, we detect negative traits within us, we can deal with them constructively or destructively. If we take our weaknesses and our mistakes personally, we will make them bigger by being sad about them, or getting angry, or feeling inferior. Alternatively, we could simply correct them, without resorting to drama. Other examples are to do with talents and abilities. Each one of us is good at something. Each one of us has talents, but what do we do with them? Most of us are not even interested in our own talents; we just study any old subject or work in a job that does not suit us at all.
This is the way out: discover and appreciate your talents and utilize them intelligently for your own good and that of your community. This is the shortest and fastest way to a happy, successful and fulfilled life!
Character, as we have seen, is a human construct and subject to human principles. Personality, on the other hand, is the realization of divine thought. As it is created in the image of God, it remains unchangeable, noble and complete. The personality is an enrichment of infinity and creation. It is endowed with certain qualities and abilities to be able to fulfil certain tasks. Each personality is unique – God does not do mass production!
The origin of personality is God, while the origin of character is ego. Humanness arose from a lack of divineness, and so the human character arose from a lack of love whilst the personality rose out of abundance.
True spiritual development is the move from character to personality, the development ("dis-envelopment") from the envelopment of ego.
Refining our character is one of our most important life-tasks. The more we do good, the more divine we become and the more our true personality takes control of our actions. This brings us ever closer to our true origins and our true home of eternal light.
