Skeletal (Striated) Muscle

Muscle tissue consists of contractile cells that can be divided into skeletal (striated), cardiac, and smooth muscle subtypes. Skeletal muscle differs from the other two subtypes because it can be made to contract by conscious neural control, making it voluntary. Skeletal muscle tissue is composed of fused (i.e., multinuclear) specialized cells containing contractile proteins, connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves (Table 3.2) (Gillies & Lieber, 2011). Muscle repair and adaptability is conferred by satellite and stem cells (both of which can replace damaged muscle cells) and neural innervation.
