Part 1. The Trial
Оглавление“Elfinate’s teaching says that energy or ‘power’ lurks in everything that is in Oira – the celestial realm where we all live. And the carrier or owner senses this energy and can direct it into the world of matter from the world of the spirit – the invisible…” Varlag repeated aloud the words from the book that was closed before him. After that he opened the necessary page and checked if he had missed something.
The young man was preparing for the trials of the owners, of course, they will be practical, but knowing a mentor who is too demanding, it is worth repeating the theory. Yes, everything was as it is written in the book. He read a lot, easily learning any knowledge. Sometimes the world of books was much closer to him than realities.
Varlag was born a prince of Gladia – the eastern kingdom of humans. He was nice and strong, with a mane of fair hair, gray eyes, playful freckles and a strong-willed chin – the girls always looked at him.
He already had everything he could wish for, and he was also the owner. For his royal family, this was not uncommon – his father was a calidite and his mother was a shidite, and other relatives have been carriers since time immemorial. Varlag’s family was skilled in ownership, and the transfer of power from parents to children had a place to be, but his abilities began to manifest later and were weaker than other children.
Although the sages still could not thoroughly study and explain the nature and transmission of ownership, entering into eternal debate in their theories and research. You can simply accept the fact that it was a blessing and that’s it. After all, the ownership is a gift that can come down both to the nobility and to the children of the shepherd, in whose family there was no owners never. Or in some cases, the ownership could become a real curse… It was possible to study the ownership indefinitely, which each time surprised scientists and destroyed their theories, but there remained one indisputable and cruel fact. Children born from the union of the elf and human did not possess any ownership.
So far, Varlag could not boast of a possessive power worthy of a future king. Maybe the reason was that the young man never liked ownership, even now, after a long training?.. Varlag did not see the point in the strength that is needed to sculpt pots, burn tiles, and water fields. All this could be done without this, by ordinary labor, without spending so much time on training and control.
When he talked about the true calling of the owners – these are battles and adventures, many did not share his views, they were frightened of them and began to shun.
His father was always strict with Varlag, and most of all he hated when the prince entered into disputes with him. Of course, he did not approve of the ardent views of his son.
After all, the owners of all three races kept peace in Mariel.
The kingdoms flourished, but no one was going to fight, seize new lands or at least change something. Enemies of the states have long been defeated. And everyone was satisfied with the current state of affairs, and the changes and thoughts about them simply frightened, although much of the device was outdated, often incorrect, according to the young prince, and required certain reforms. The unshakable and eternal Elfinate – the union of two great kingdoms: Mirityl and Meriel, successfully managed to maintain a peaceful life, both in its territories and in the lands of its closest allies: Nud – the northern country and Gladia – the homeland of Varlag. Hordes of redrins and savages from the South, annoying everyone, had long been defeated by the Elfinate, they left Meriel and no one had seen them for a very long time. So the world reigned.
Ardent debates and loud speeches remained that way, only having begun the teaching of ownership, the prince could receive the disposition of his father and later on the throne.
So he ended up in Vysdom, where owners from all over the world were trained to handle their strength. The title and origin did not matter here. Some of Varlag’s fellow students did not even know that he was prince of Gladia. Honestly, he himself was terribly tired of palace etiquette, various rules and appeals according to the title, and also from servility and unnecessary reverence for him, so here he could just be himself.
The evening was drawing near. Azure with the last golden rays of the sun, he penetrated a high window, simply furnished, a room without frills and excesses. Long shadows crawled across the floor. It got too dark, Varlag lit candles and continued reading.
The trial will begin very soon, and this will distract him a little. Of course, he was worried that he could not pass it. But the main thing here is to want? But how to force yourself to be the owner, if you do not need it?
He imagined his father’s disappointed face, how this grimace was replaced by disgust… And how his mother would reassure him. She was always on his side.
Often he missed the house, even the grumpy king. According to his friends, revels, hunting… Although the owners-pupils had shelter, food, a certain life prosperity, and even walks around the city were allowed in their free time, they had many restrictions and duties, and also endless teaching. There was little practice, except a meditation. To begin with, it was necessary to study history, philosophy, politics, mathematics, and many other sciences. And Varlag, with his peers, was still at this stage of training.
Today’s trial was to determine the specialization of each of them, which would mark the beginning of a narrowly targeted course and allow moving on, developing the most powerful form of ownership. In a carrier’s youth, power is manifested chaotically, so it’s extremely difficult to determine its future: it can be a whole combination of skills of all types, but so weak as to try to single out one thing and attribute the holder to a specific kind. Young carriers can create sparks of fire, immediately turn them into snowflakes, which, when melted, fall to the ground, from which in turn a tree begins to break through.
The type of ownership depends on a lot: from body forms to character and way of thinking. Varlag had read the works of a sage who claimed that ownership depends on the shape of the nose. This, of course, was ridiculous. After the young man had fun for a long time, wondering which of the students belonged, looking at their noses. There are also combinators who own equally two areas of ownership. Varlag did not expect anything beyond measure from himself. Among people were common calidia – temperature changes, shidia – controlling water with the wind and terrestry – owning land. His father controlled the heat, and his mother controlled the water. Given the widespread theories that they also studied for a long time, the opposing force dominated the other. Thus, the water extinguished the fire, suppressing it, the fire drowned ice, and the stone did not succumb to either water or fire. So far, Varlag has shown himself to be the same in all three types. Equally weak, as it seemed to him, although he received the praise of a mentor and fellow students.
The coming trial will be to use objects created in such a way as to accurately respond to the kind of ownership that gave rise to them.
And all this time one question haunted the young man. What happens if the test fails? If not one of these relics responds to it? Will they immediately kick you out, or at least it will be possible to remain an archivist in Vysdom?
