Adopting a Transformative Approach: Individual Activity Pause and Reflect to Prioritize Equity Leadership

Оглавление

Not all of these stories will resonate with you. However, we reviewed them here so you can see some of the ways you and your colleagues might automatically resist a deeper engagement in equity work. We also offer these stories so you can reflect on them and their impact.

Which of the preceding stories do you hear regularly from your colleagues?

In what ways do the people you work with or work for act to embrace these stories, either publicly or privately?

Part of engaging in equity work is understanding how these stories have impacted the way you see school, your roles, and the role of others. When you identify and examine the stories you tell, and the stories that exist around you, you've taken an important step forward in improving your ability to successfully increase equity. In the process, you'll begin to identify your own imperfections and vulnerabilities; this is vitally important to your equity leadership, so don't avoid it! For now, this work will be private, so take the time to deeply engage in your own honest reflection. We'll provide guidance for sharing what you choose later in the book.

How have you told these stories? When have you seen them in yourself? In what ways are you still wrestling with each of these? If you are not saying these words, where do you connect or disconnect with these stories?

What other stories do you tell yourself about why you don't do better?

What impact do you notice these stories have on you? For your students? In your relationships with your students and their families?
