AGEING

Оглавление

The ageing process can be thought of as a continuum with a decrease in functional capacity, which is determined by genetics, lifestyle factors and chronic diseases. This process can be delayed by addressing lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise.

The nutritional requirements during different ages and stages of the life cycle will vary according to the specific demands on certain nutrients. The nutritional goals for sport change according to what happens to our bodies with age and these changes are highlighted in the sections below. Protein requirements are higher during childhood and adolescence for growth and maturation, whereas iron and calcium are important during pregnancy and lactation. For example, altered intake of fat may become a goal for an older exercising adult due to changes in fat deposition (body composition) during ageing.
