A macramé tapestry made from natural twine is the perfect accent for a simple interior. Try using a different color to suit the atmosphere of the room.
The Pendant: A Basic Tapestry Adaptation
This piece is created by using only what could be called the foundations of macramé—the square knot and the half knot. Although there are only two types of knot, the number of knots and placement of pattern allows for a range of expression, which is the appeal of macramé. The pendant uses fine cord and has less repetition of pattern, but otherwise is made in exactly the same way as the tapestry. The instructions are explained in detail with photos, so this piece is recommended for complete beginners.

A Two-Tone Tapestry
This work is formed from three long, narrow belt-like pieces, one of which is longer and in a different color from the other two. Altering the number of small diamond motifs allows each section to be shortened or lengthened, while adding more sections makes for a wider tapestry.

A Native American Tapestry
The fringing on both sides of this work is striking. Loosening the twist in the cords brings out more volume and creates a piece that is Native American in flavor. The center and side sections are knotted separately, bringing a sense of depth to the work. The diagonal, dimensional twisted pattern on the sides is formed from diagonal half hitches.

A Square Tapestry
This tapestry is like a sampler of patterns made from double half hitches. Working in diagonal half hitches and changing direction results in an arrowhead pattern, while adding a row of horizontal double half hitches is effective as a break in the pattern. The four horizontal diamond motifs recall a dreamcatcher, so maybe this will be a lucky item that brings happiness.

A V-Motif Tapestry
The use of a circular piece of wood rather than driftwood or a wooden rod to secure the cord makes for a fresh new approach to display. As the cord used to create the work is thick, the double half hitches and half knots take on a different vibe from that of finer cord. Loosening the twists in the cord and leaving the ends long easily creates volume, but you are free to cut them to whatever length best suits your interior style.

A Black Tapestry
Monotone black makes this a chic piece, with the alternating flat surfaces arranged seemingly in layers, creating interest. The neatness of the raised rows of horizontal and vertical double half hitches and the precision of the diagonal cords elevate the degree of perfection. Take care to use consistent tension as you work.

Owl Wall Hangings
Owls have long been a popular and meaningful motif in many parts of the world. Wooden beads stand in for their large, round eyes. From ancient times, they have been viewed as auspicious birds, and are also known as symbols of wisdom, learning and knowledge. Use a fine cord to make a small version—it will make a special charm to give to a friend or to carry around when you need a mental boost.

A Partition Screen
Light enters gently through the spaces between the knots, which also allow breezes to pass through, making this piece function as a nice substitute for a curtain. Because it’s a large work, the sense of satisfaction on completing it is exceptional, and it’s likely to steal the show as an interior piece. Hanging its four component pieces in different ways results in a completely different look, so experiment with ways to position them.

Cavandoli Hangings
Two colors of thread knotted using horizontal and vertical double half hitches create a pattern in this method known as Cavandoli work, which is often used to make friendship bracelets. Various patterns can be formed, but here, two contrasting colors are used to repeat simple motifs, resulting in works with a sophisticated air.

A Flag Garland
Small flag motifs are joined to form a garland that can be used to decorate a wall or ceiling. This piece is made with one long center cord and nine motifs. It’s been kept simple by using only one color for all the flags, but if a different color is used for each flag, it becomes a colorful piece that is perfect for a child’s room.
