Small Interior Design Items

Macramé can be used not only for decoration, but for practical items around the home.

Cushion Covers

There are all kinds of ways to enjoy macramé, from large items such as cushion covers to smaller ones such as trivets. Here, a cushion cover is simply a flat piece of macramé folded into two—all you need to do is place it over the cushion and use any excess cord at the sides to fix it in a few places. The cushion is visible through the cover, so using cord to complement the cushion color will give the finished item that little extra panache.

Tie the cord at the sides in a few places to fix the cushion in place.

Macramé Curtain Ties

Simple curtains can look a bit plain held open with ties in the same fabric, so why not try macramé curtain ties instead? Use thick cord to create items that are simple yet make a bold interior statement. Have fun incorporating wooden beads and so on in between knots to create variation.

Finished sizes: curtain tie (above): approx. 19” (48 cm) long; belt (below): approx. 25” (63 cm) long

Make this project longer, with fringing at both ends, and it becomes a belt. Worn with a plain dress or skirt, it makes a stylish accessory.

Braid one end and form a loop, and make the other end into a tassel. Pass the tassel through the loop to hold back the curtain.

A Lampshade

Use a metal ring as the core from which to attach cords, then attach S hooks and chains to create a simple lampshade. The gentle light radiating through the knots is sure to ease fatigue at the end of a long day. Make sure to use an LED type light that does not emit heat.

Bottlework

Bottlework involves encasing a glass bottle in macramé. For this piece, a bottle slightly wider than usual has been selected in order to hold a scented candle, with relaxing effects from both the gentle light and the fragrance. Adapt the work to a different bottle size by changing the frequency of the motifs and the length of the fringe.
