Outdoor pieces

Оглавление

Pyrography items for outdoor use have their own issues that need to be considered when finishing the piece. The marks burned into the wood can fade with time when exposed to strong sunlight or other elements of the weather. I use a hard-wearing yacht varnish, also known as spar or marine varnish, to finish my outdoor creations. It creates a tough seal around the wood that protects it from damage by water. It is advisable to apply at least 3-4 coats of these varnishes to ensure the best protection possible.

It is possible to purchase yacht varnish with ultra-violet light inhibitors, reducing the effects of strong sunlight. If you create such an outdoor piece, I would suggest applying another coat of yacht varnish every 2-3 years to keep up the protection level and to repair any damage to the previous coats. It is always the best practice to consider where the item is placed: perhaps a particular wall is shaded well at most points of the day, or there may be an alcove or porch that offers good protection from the sun and rain.
