“Coastal Carolina University is a public, comprehensive, liberal arts institution. The university offers baccalaureate programs to approximately 8,000 students in 40 fields of study including acclaimed programs in marine science, resort tourism and professional golf management. Graduate programs include an M.B.A. Waties Island, 1,062 acres of pristine barrier island on the Atlantic coast, provides a natural laboratory for extensive study in the sciences. Students enjoy a nationally competitive NCAA I athletic program that includes football, an inspiring cultural calendar and a tradition of community interaction fueled by more than 100 student clubs and organizations.”

Campus Setting

Coastal Carolina University, founded in 1954, is a public, comprehensive university. Its 307-acre campus is located in Conway, nine miles from Myrtle Beach. A four-year public institution, Coastal Carolina University has an enrollment of 8,360 students. In addition to a large, well-stocked library, the campus also has a marine science and wetland biology lab. Coastal Carolina University provides on-campus housing with 1,029 units that can accommodate 3,267 students. Housing options: coed dorms • single-student apartments • special housing for disabled students. Recreation and sports facilities include: athletic fields • basketball and volleyball courts • weight room.

Student Life and Activities

Most students (72 percent) live off campus which does impact the on-campus social scene. Nevertheless, like any college, students do find time to create their own recreational outlets. As reported by a school representative, “Cliques’ are prominent, social and cultural life is up and coming. OSAL, Residence Life and Multicultural Student Services are working to enhance cultural diversity and awareness. Popular gathering spots include the CINO Grille, Student Center game room, volleyball court in front of the Woods community, campus recreation center, Broadway at the Beach, Coastal Ale House and the beach. Popular campus events include football games/tailgating, late night bingo in the commons, Casino Night in the Fall, CINO Day in the Spring, Homecoming week events, Greek week events, Greek formals, step shows, diversity programs, intramural sports, basketball games, baseball games and game show nights. Coastal Carolina University has 91 official student organizations. Popular groups on campus include Greeks, athletes, STAR members, Leadership Challenge members, Coastal Productions Board, honor societies, the Chanticleer, CCU Customs, gospel choir and intramural teams. For those interested in sports, there are intramural teams such as: badminton • basketball • dodgeball • football • flag football • golf • pickleball • soccer • softball • Whiffle ball • volleyball • water polo. Coastal Carolina University is a member of the Big South Conference (Division I).

Academics and Learning Environment

For the B student, the learning environment of a college is just as important as the quality of its academic program. Coastal Carolina University has 315 full-time and 242 part-time faculty members, offering a student-to-faculty ratio of 18:1. The most common course size is 20 to 29 students. Coastal Carolina University offers 56 majors with the most popular being management, marketing and health promotion and least popular being physics, chemistry and dramatic arts. The school has a general core requirement . Cooperative education is available. All first-year students must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher to avoid academic probation, and a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required to graduate. B Student Support and Success

At Coastal Carolina, professional academic advising and peer mentoring are available. The school also has a course called UNIV 110, which is designed to develop critical thinking and research skills, to provide community support during the first semester of enrollment and to acquaint students with the school’s resources. Tutoring sessions are offered and there is even a Grammar Hotline to call. The UNIV 110 course, also known as a “First Year Experience,” involves peers, faculty and staff and other members within the community. Students play an active part in forums, workshops, discussions, readings, case studies and community service projects. This includes assignments that might come in various forms, ranging from quizzes, tests and journals to presentations, portfolios and writing projects. In the end, UNIV 110 helps students to develop a clearer and more comprehensive academic and career development plan for the future.

Coastal Carolina University provides a variety of support programs including dedicated guidance for: academic • career • personal • psychological • minority students • veterans • non-traditional students • family planning. The average freshman year GPA is 3.0, and 66 percent of freshmen students return for their sophomore year. What do students do after college? While many enter the work force, approximately 18 percent pursue a graduate degree immediately after graduation. Among students who enter the work force, approximately 83 percent enter a field related to their major within six months of graduation. Support for Students with Learning Disabilities

Students with learning disabilities may take advantage of specific support programs offered by Coastal Carolina University. Also, a lightened course load may be granted to LD students. High school foreign language waivers are accepted. According to the school, all students who register are requested to participate in a coaching relationship with the counselor where an academic plan is developed and followed and there are meetings with the student throughout the first semester. Meetings include time management, organization, specific areas of weakness (i.e. reading, math, writing), tutoring and study group. Students with learning disabilities will find the following programs at Coastal Carolina University extremely useful: remedial math • special classes • tutors • learning center • testing accommodations • untimed tests • extended time for tests • take-home exam • oral tests • readers • typist/scribe • note-taking services • reading machines • tape recorders • texts on tape • videotaped classes • early syllabus • priority registration • priority seating. An advisor/advocate from the LD program is available to students.

How to Get Admitted

For admissions decisions, non-academic factors considered: interview • extracurricular activities • special talents, interests, abilities • character/personal qualities • work experience • geographical location. A high school diploma is required, although a GED is also accepted for admissions consideration. SAT or ACT test scores are required of all applicants. SAT Subject Test scores are considered, if submitted, but are not required. According to the admissions office: Sliding scale with minimum combined SAT score of 960 (composite ACT score of 20) and minimum 2.5 GPA required.
