According to the Pinkerton Intelligence Services, Panama has one of the highest ratings for safety in all of Latin America. While petty crime is common, kidnappings and violent crime are rare. Many citizens of nearby dangerous countries such as Colombia, Venezuela and Guatemala visit Panama as a vacation place or buy a second home due to the safety factor. It is safe and easy to rent a car in Panama and roads are also safe. The country’s lone area of political instability is in Darien Province, which is isolated from the rest of the country—no roads connect it to Panama City and the more populated western provinces.
