CULTIVATING POSITIVE STATES OF MIND

EMOTIONAL BALANCE

“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.”

William James

I work on creating positive states of mind today in order to improve my attitude. One way I do this is by remembering to be grateful for my life today. And a great way to cultivate an attitude of gratitude is by writing a list of the four or five things I’m most grateful for each night before I go to sleep. And because I take this action to cultivate a positive state of mind, today I have a degree of emotional balance that helps me as I perform the tasks of recovery: prayer, meditation, meeting attendance, working the steps, and service.

Sometimes I look at a gratitude list from a month or a year ago and see what things have changed. My gratitude lists help me maintain a positive attitude by showing me that I do have much to be grateful for. As long as I work my program of recovery, my attitude of gratitude will help me cultivate and maintain the positive state of mind so necessary for my recovery.

I cultivate, honor, and nurture a positive state of mind, knowing that when my attitude and mind-set are strong and positive I have a better chance of living peacefully with my chronic pain.
