The environmental management of any defense installation will require reliable information on the presence and concentration of metallic and chemical residues resulting from tactical training. Reliable information can only be obtained through the proper collection, documentation, storage, processing and analysis of samples. Reliable data is reproducible data, and only reproducible data is robust enough to stand up to both scientific and legal scrutiny. Through extensive research, field experience, and application of lessons learned to actual field characterizations, a methodology has been developed that will enable the collection of reproducible data. This methodology, known as the Multi-Increment^® sampling method, will be described in this chapter.
