Brittle Fracture

 No appreciable plastic deformation

 Crack propagation is very fast

 Crack propagates nearly perpendicular to the direction of the applied stress

 Crack often propagates by cleavage – breaking of atomic bonds along specific crystallographic planes (cleavage planes).
