De aarde is omgeven door een ca. 200 km hoge

dampkring, waarbij de dichtheid van de lucht

(en dus ook de luchtdruk) afneemt naarmate de

hoogte toeneemt. De door het gewicht van de lucht

veroorzaakte druk op het aardoppervlak bedraagt

gemiddeld pamb = 1.013 bar op zeeniveau, wat overeenkomt met een kwikkolom van 760 mm.

The earth is surrounded by an approximately 200 km

thick atmosphere, whereby the density of the air (and

thus the air pressure) decreases with increasing alti-

tude. The pressure at the surface of the earth caused

by the weight of the air averages pamb = 1.013 bar at sea level, corresponding to a mercury column of 760 mm.
