Like previous editions, this fourth edition of the anthology is composed of the writing of those who have had a profound influence on our understanding of what is most important for learners, teachers, and schools. We thank our colleagues Ann Winfield, Kerri Ullucci, Elsa Wiehe, Elizabeth Robinson, Amanda Vincenti, Deanna Rochefort, David Rasmussen, and Monisa Gardner-Page for agreeing to write new pieces for the fourth edition of this book.
Great teachers and writers, however, are not our only sources of inspiration or support: Special thanks to Pam and Nancy for their criticisms of the manuscript at its various stages. We are also grateful to Candice Harman for her artistic sense and input regarding the design of the book’s cover, and for the final product.
