Stitch Library

The following hand stitches will be used to construct your dogs and create their unique features and expressions.

Running Stitch

The most basic of stitches, running stitch can be used to sew

two pieces of fabric together as well as being a decorative embroidery stitch.

To begin, bring your threaded needle up through your felt at (A), then push the needle back down at (B).

Continue with this sequence, whether you are sewing in a straight line, or along a curve.

Blanket Stitch

This stitch is used to join two pieces of fabric together along their edge, as well as providing a decorative finish.

To begin, bring your needle up through the felt at (A). Next, push your needle down through your felt at (B), with the point of your needle appearing from beneath the edge of your fabric as shown. Make a loop with the sewing thread under the needle, then gently pull your needle over the loop and through to secure the stitch.

Repeat these steps around the edge of your dog, using an equal distance between (A) and (B).

Seed Stitch

Also known as Rice Stitch, this looks like a scattering of seeds or rice grains, perfect for hinting at whiskers on your pup's muzzle.

Bring the needle up from the back of the felt (A), then push it back down at (B) to create a small, straight stitch.

Repeat the stitches in different directions, but make them the same length, with even spacing, for a pleasing effect.

Backstitch

Backstitch is ideal for sewing a straight outline stitch.

Start by bringing your needle up through the felt at (A), then push the needle down through the felt at (B). Bring the needle up through the felt at (C).

Repeat these steps to sew your outline, which can be straight or curved.

KEY TO STITCHES

BATH TIME!

The delicate nature of the hand stitching and brads mean that the finished dogs are not suitable for machine washing. If your dog gets dirty, use a damp cloth to gently spot treat the mark on the surface.
