Since Jesus Christ, the Word of God, became flesh in human history, the historical critical method for interpreting Sacred Scripture is important, but it is even more important to realize that Jesus himself reveals the deepest meaning of history, which is one of salvation. The writing of the Gospels was also historical and had its stages, as we saw at the beginning of the last chapter. In this chapter, we look at the first phase of their composition, namely the words and deeds of Jesus himself. From these it becomes crystal clear that Satan really exists and is hard at work. This is especially significant in our time, since persons often deny the reality of the Devil and only think of him as a symbol of evil.
