There are well over 20,000 temples spread throughout Bali. Many of the most important ones are situated dramatically in the mountains and near waterways. Visitors are welcome if they are respectfully dressed in a sarung and sash. Please do not enter if you are menstruating or in mourning.


Monkeys are a constant source of entertainment at the temple complex inside the Monkey Forest Sanctuary.

This tall, open shrine in the Northern corner of every temple is reserved for Surya, the Sun God.


is a small temple built on an island in Lake Beratan. It is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the Goddess of the Lake.

Black thatched shrines are a symbol of the holy Hindu mountain Mahameru. It is believed that the Gods descend to earth through them.


Having the same status as a royal temple, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is perched on a cliff high above the Indian Ocean.


Sitting on a rocky outcrop off the southern coast, Tanah Lot is only accessible during low tide.


Sitting on a slope of the volcano Agung, the Besakih temple complex is considered to be the “Mother Temple” by the Balinese. It hosts the most spectacular festivals.
