Choosing a finish
ОглавлениеChoice of finish is a highly personal matter. Some woodworkers love oil for the way it makes the grain “pop” and for its ease of application. Others prefer a clear-coat finish that’s easy to repair, like shellac, or one that forms a durable coat, like polyurethane. Still others may opt for a simple wax finish, buffed to a soft sheen. If your bowl will be in contact with food, be sure that your choice is safe for this purpose. Most finishes are considered safe once they have cured fully and the odor has dissipated, which may take as long as several weeks. For a bowl finish that’s made from only food-safe ingredients, use oil made for butcher blocks or salad bowls. If you’re not sure how a finish will look when applied to your bowl, test it on a scrap of the wood you are using.
