As the nurse manager, you create a climate that impacts those who work for and with you. By recognizing that both employees and those they serve can be a source of rudeness and incivility, having a response plan in place will avoid having to scramble when an event occurs.

Promoting good relationships between all members of your team is also part of the nurse manager’s job. Being a combination of cheerleader and coach as well as demonstrating loyalty and commitment to those you supervise will build a foundation of positive relationships throughout your unit and organization.


Fostering Cultural Change

Poll your staff about key behaviors that reflect civility. Ask them to write down two or three important things that they believe demonstrate a sense of civility between coworkers. You can do this anonymously so people will feel comfortable being honest. Summarize the responses and explore the idea of a “civility behavior contract” between coworkers and accountability checks for incivility. You can do the same with expectations for civility toward and from patients and family members or other visitors.
