A DREAM I NEVER HAD

Оглавление

in which a van

pulls up the dark driveway,

its long lights parting

the heavy night. The side

door slides open and there

is my mother, beckoning.

“Quick,” she says, “get in

before your father finds out

I’m not dead anymore.”

“Don’t you want to meet

your grandkids?” I ask.

“There isn’t time for that,

and you won’t miss them

where we’re going.”

“Where are we going?”

“Back, obviously, to

redo everything better.

I want to be happy this time,”

she says. “What will I do?”

I ask. “I’m too old

to be your son.” “We’ll see,”

she says, “but we have to go

now.” “Come on, Marcia,”

I hear someone hiss

from the driver’s seat.

“Come on,” says my mom.

“Daddy”—I hear Simone calling

from just inside the house.

“I have to check, Mom. Wait—

please,” I say, but already

the van is backing out,

the lights recoiling.

Already I am awake.
