shaft can render their use limited.

These can be helpful in the center

of hollows, where it can be more

difficult for bent gouges to reach.

Dog Leg/Swan Neck Gouges

This special gouge has a drastic

crank on its shaft that helps im-

mensely for drastic concave areas

or other odd shapes that pop up

in bowl carving. (K) It is especially

good at navigating spots where

there is grain reversal, like at the

bottom of a bowl, or taking tight

cuts, like where the steep sides of

a bowl transition into the bottom

of the hollow. These also come in a

variety of shapes and sweeps.

Other Specialty Gouges

There are also other specialty

edge profiles, such as V chisels,

which can be useful for carving

decorative lines. Then there are

a number of interesting offerings

such as back bent gouges and

even something called a fluteroni

(which I think might actually be

pasta), but don’t get too caught up

in those funky ones just yet. There

is plenty that can be done with the

aforementioned gouges alone.

RECOMMENDED MAKERS

Straight and bent gouges: I use a lot of

Pfeil/Swiss Made gouges because they

are readily available and come in a lot of

different sweeps and diameters, and have

a bent-shaft option. Auriou also makes

exceptional tools, but its small team of

makers can only make so many, which

means availability can fluctuate. For dog

leg/swan neck gouges: Nic Westermann,

HOOK KNIFE

Hook knives are most often seen

in spoon carving, but they are also

useful in bowl carving, especially

in concave areas where it can be

difficult to navigate grain, or in

transitions. Different grips can be

employed to get the most out of

this tool, but that could truly be a

whole book unto itself. Some are

shallow enough to use on both

convex and concave surfaces, for

both rough and fine cuts. These

can come with both short and

long handles.

RECOMMENDED MAKERS

Nic Westermann and Reid Schwartz

make exceptional hook knives and their

price is well worth the tool. Mora recently

enlisted Jögge Sundqvist to help redesign

their 164 and it’s now a much more us-

er-friendly tool at a decent price.
