TWCA CAM
Twca cams look like a longer-han-
dled exaggerated sweep version of
a hook knife that is best used for
the hollows of small, deep forms.
They make incomparably smooth
transitions out of deep cuts that
would be impossible for almost all
other tools.
RECOMMENDED MAKERS
Nic Westermann uses the same registra-
tion flats on his twca cams as he does on
his other hook knives, which allows for
much easier honing. Learn more about
this in the Sharpening chapter on p. 48.
SLOYD KNIFE
This is a straight knife that can
be a variety of lengths, but it’s
usually around 5". When you use it
properly, it can produce a number
of powerful, controlled and clean
cuts. It’s great for chamfering,
breaking edges, decoration, and
detail work. It is also a necessary
tool for spoon carving.
RECOMMENDED MAKERS
Mora (106), Nic Westermann, Reid
Schwartz. All three of these blades can be
used for both heavy and fine cuts because
of their well-balanced construction. Reid
and Nic’s knives both have that recog-
nizable feel of being made one at a time.
That said, I still use my Mora for most
every project, and a beginner may feel
more comfortable with its lighter weight
and price point.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SIMPLE KIT
Okay, so if you could only buy a few tools, what should you buy?
I get this question, or something similar, quite a bit. Here’s what I’d do:
I would go for a nice axe and adze and three or four
gouges—one dog leg/swan neck, a 3L (anywhere from
14-25 mm), a 5L (14-25 mm) , and an 8L (14-20
mm) for deeper texture. If I couldn’t get the adze
I’d nix one of the bent gouges and get a larger 9 or
11 sweep and use my axe and that (with a mallet) to
remove large amounts of waste wood. If I could swing
it, my next purchase would be a spokeshave. Boom.
