SHARPENING
T
his is the most important part. This is the framework upon which
everything else is built. Once you’re able to consistently produce a
sharp edge on your tools, your work will immediately benefit from it. If
you’re struggling with sharpening, especially with any curved profile tools,
you’re not alone. Bowl carving tends to utilize the tools that intimidate
most carvers to the point of missing out on the results they want, and they
end up throwing in the towel before they can truly even dig in.
For three years I worked with the Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event Staff,
traveling the country teaching hand tool woodworking skills. Without a
shred of doubt the thing I demonstrated most and witnessed the most
aha moments from were sharpening demonstrations. And there’s a good
reason—there is a TON of information out there on sharpening, but it’s
hard to sort through it all and learn what parts truly matter, and why.
