⸙ WHAT IS PURPOSE?

Chapter Six

Purpose in simplest terms is the job description for your life. It is the thing you are expected to do. The thing that haunts you when you don’t do it, when you should have been doing it. It is the impact you owe to the world around you. Imagine that there is someone who will reward you for accomplishing certain things he or she expects you to do. Those things that you are expected to do is your purpose. A purpose meets a need.

So, purpose is the reason for your existence. Something that you were designed specifically to accomplish. There is a reason for your heart’s natural desires. There is a reason you lack peace when certain things are being done injustice to. It is something that you can do and are fulfilled. You can work 24/7 without being paid for and without being bored or tired of doing it. It is the one thing you desire to do to make a difference in the world.

If you are a Christian and you read the Bible you will understand why Jesus said His food was to do the will of Him who sent Him and finish His work (John 4:34). He had His fulfilment and joy in teaching and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom and healing the sick because that was His purpose. He could do it all day, walking around from city to city without complaining about it. Mandela fought without turning back because that was his purpose – to liberate the people of South Africa.

Your purpose for life, just like any organ in the body or part in a machine, is not about serving yourself. The purpose for life is about making a difference to the world around you. It’s what you do for others whether you are paid for it or not. You were never put here on earth with talents and skills just to exercise them to yourself. No. It is for the world to benefit as you make it a better home for everyone.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

The purpose is where your legacy is born from. When you build on your purpose so well, you build something that makes a difference in people's lives even when you are long gone. We have Christians today because of something that took place 2020 years ago; all because Jesus knew and invested on his purpose. What a legacy! What will be your legacy?
