Roast Lamb with Savory Sauce (may serve more than 6 if fewer side dishes)

1 4 pound (or close to it) leg of lamb
1 Tablespoon olive oil (more if necessary)
½ teaspoon asafetida powder (from Middle East markets, or use more cumin)
1 teaspoon finely minced or crushed garlic
salt and pepper to taste
