The Ditch
Behind the red house, in the direction of the Catskill Mountains that marked our western horizon, there was a shallow, swampy valley about three-quarters of a mile wide. After the spring rains and melt, the marsh flooded the lowest corners of our hayfield, and during a really wet spring, water might rise up and briefly cover the dirt road that crossed the valley a mile below our house.
