1 1 A seminal work in the field of material culture studies is a volume edited by Arjun Appadurai, The Social Life of Things: Commodities in Cultural Perspective (Cambridge University Press, 1988), in which the various essays pushed scholars to expand their notions of how value is ascribed through the methodology of constructing “biographies” of particular goods and objects. The theoretical underpinnings of this work are laid out particularly well in the introductory essay by Appadurai as well as in the essay by Igor Kopytoff, “The Cultural Biography of Things: Commoditization as Process.”
