Transforming Hacksaw Blades into Bow Sanders

Bow sanders are great for smoothing a carving without

changing the overall shape, but they take up a lot of

space. I make bow sanders from old hacksaw blades.

It’s easy to change grits, and you can take them apart

and store them flat.

Cover the hacksaw blades with tape; I use black

electrical. Bend the blade as shown, and measure the

distance between the ends. Add a couple inches and

cut strips of cloth-backed sandpaper to that length.

Bend the blades again, and use binder clips to attach

the sandpaper to the blade. When you’re finished,

remove the sandpaper so the blades are flat for storage.

Simple Photo

Backdrop

A cluttered background will detract from pictures of

your carving. Purchase a project display board from

an office supply store and paint it white. Then, paint

a small cardboard box white to lift your carving up

off the table. Not only does the plain backdrop put the

emphasis on your carving, but the white color collects

and reflects ambient light so you can turn off the flash.

This keeps the photo from being overexposed and

shows the true colors of the carving.

TIP

Classic Tip: Comfortable Sanding Sticks

Don’t throw out your toothbrush when you get a

new one every six months! Cut the bristles off and

attach sandpaper to the tip. You can use self-adhesive

sandpaper or attach cloth-backed sandpaper using

double-sided tape. You can shape the tip of the

toothbrush to fit into tight areas.
