Realistic Fur
Texture
I
add realistic texture to my animal
caricature carvings to give them a bit of
realism. The contrast between the realistic
fur texture and the whimsical pose and
clothing on this bunny emphasizes the
caricature and steps the piece up.
Carving the Bunny
Carve the bunny using your choice of tools;
my suggestions are in the Materials & Tools
list. Then, refer to the patterns and draw a
few lines representing the general flow of
the fur. Note how it flows around the facial
features, and pay attention to how the fur
flow changes in the middle of each ear and
middle of the back.
I will demonstrate two methods of
adding fur texture. For the face, ears, and
paws, I woodburn fine texture directly onto
the smoothly carved surface. For the body, I
use a veiner or rotary tool to carve the main
flow of the fur and then break it into finer fur
texture with the woodburner.
This caricature bunny blends
realism with whimsy, making it
the perfect project for practicing
fur techniques
