Carving a
Cross Necklace
Ball-in-cross and attached chain are
carved from a single piece of wood
By James O. Dodge
W
hile looking for a greater challenge
than standard wooden chains
or ball-in-cages, I decided to carve a full
necklace (chain and pendant) from a solid
piece of wood. After a few missteps, I
developed the process to carve the chain
and cross from one piece of wood. To make
it even more challenging, I turned the cross
into a ball-in-cross.
When you're carving the chain, be careful
with the links on the two ends of the blank;
the short grain makes those links fragile.
