Possibly the oldest form of decorative carving, chip carving
designs are incised into wood. Chip carving is almost the
inverse of relief carving, where the background is carved away
to leave the design. Chip carving designs are often geometrical,
but they can also be free-form, like these patterns. I combined
conventional three-sided chips with more flowing cuts to make
modern designs with a traditional flair. I used the patterns to
make plaques, but you could also carve the designs into boxes,
furniture, or cabinets. These patterns might also be fun to
woodburn.
